Seminar on European Research Area 2009

Introduction

The Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, together with its Commission for European Matters (CEM) and the Institute for European Studies of the Jagiellonian University organized a one-day seminar devoted to European Research Area on May 15, 2009 in Krakow as a follow-up to the recently prepared PAU opinion on the Green Paper "European Research Area: New Perspectives” COM(2007161final). PAU issued its opinion in 2007 upon the request of the president of All European Academies (ALLEA). The seminar took place at the premises of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Krakow, ul. Sławkowska 17.

The objective of this seminar was to present and analyse the research policy of the European Union against the background of the European Research Area and related Polish strategy of scientific development. We had presentations on the EU instruments to be applied in the field and discussions on opportunities and risks related to the Polish participation. We have learnt more about the mechanisms used to harmonize, optimize and increase the role of Polish science and difficulties regarding the localization and access to large research facilities and European research centres.

The program of the meeting was arranged along two main axes: "Policy" and "Implementation". The seminar gave us an opportunity to invite representatives of the European Commission and other international bodies, as well as leading personalities of the Polish science and administration, as the speakers and participants.
