Scientific Station in Katowice
By a resolution of its council of 29 November 2013, PAU’s first Arts and Science Station was established in the building of the University of Silesia in Katowice at ul. Bankowa 4. The Station, which integrates the scientific community of Silesia and the whole of Poland, strengthens cooperation between scholars from different universities and facilitates interaction between researchers representing both the sciences and the humanities, which makes it possible to tackle difficult interdisciplinary research topics and to share experiences and outlooks. It is instrumental too in raising funds for scholarships, organising scientific and cultural undertakings, and facilitating access to PAU publications.

Mathematics Commission

The PAU Council established the Mathematics Commission at a sitting held on 24 February 2015. It was the idea of prof. zw. dr hab. Aleksander Błaszczyk, who also played a considerable organisational role. The purpose of the Katowice Mathematics Commission is to brings together mathematicians active in Silesia who are involved in both basic research in mathematics and its application in other fields of science. The commission pursues this purpose by organising regular meetings devoted to exchanges of opinion on the prospects for the development of mathematics in Poland and, especially, in Silesia. It organises popularising lectures on research work conducted in academic centres in Silesia. No less important is the outreach work it does in conjunction with secondary schools, colleges, and universities. The commission also envisages publishing initiatives, in particular those aimed at bringing modern academic textbooks to the Polish market. It also intends to become involved in reviewing mathematics textbooks and syllabi. The theme of the commission’s inaugural meeting was The Interaction of Functional Analysis Methods and Functional Equation Theory.
