Class V of Medicine

Director: Wiesław Pawlik
Deputy Director: Jan Albrecht
Secretary: Tomasz Brzozowski

Class V Members

The members of PAU Class V include physicians, pharmacists, and biologists whose scientific work is directly connected with medicine. The meetings of the Class are regularly held jointly with the PAU Classes III and IV, and have included papers on the general problems of medicine, presented both by members of the Class and by foreign scientists visiting Cracow.

Two scientific symposia in the medical sciences took place in 1995 under the auspices of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. One of them, organized in cooperation with the Medical Research Center of the Jagiellonian University and the Polish Physiological Association, dealt with the centennial of the discovery of adrenaline, which was made simultaneously by Polish and English researchers. The second symposium dealt with the problem of the role of infection by Helicobacter pylori in inflammations of the mucous membranes of the stomach. In this area a crucial role has been played by the research of Stanisław Konturek and Jerzy Stachura, members of our Academy who are also affiliated with the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Within the Class of Medicine there is the PAU Commission on Medical Ethics. The members of the Class also take part in the work of the PAU Commission on Threats to Civilization.

On the initiative and on behalf of the Class, the Tadeusz Browicz Prize has been awarded since 1999 to recognize outstanding achievements in the field of medicine and pharmacology. Until recently the Prize was funded by the PLIVA SA pharmaceutical company. The English Language School of Medicine at the Jagiellonian University’s Collegium Medicum, previously the second sponsor, was the sole sponsor in 2001. The Tadeusz Browicz Prize is formally awarded to the winners at the June meeting of the PAU’s General Assembly.

Commissions in Class V:

PAU Commission on Medical Ethics

Chairman: Władysław Stróżewski
Deputy Chairmen: Jacek J. Pietrzyk, Krzysztof Szczygieł

Commission Members

The PAU Commission on Medical Ethics - organized in the PAU Class of Medicine (3 XII 1992), but comprising also representatives of nonmedical disciplines, especially philosophers - is particularly interested in issues of medical deontology, the regulation of the use on experimental animals in biomedical research, and other problems of contemporary medical ethics.

The Commission creates the basis for evaluating the physician’s activity, comparable to the most important achievements of the natural sciences, which have significance for improving the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of disease.

Eight volumes of the Works of the Commission have been published, along with a book by Kazimierz Szewczyk, Medical Ethics and Deontology.
In 1997, a symposium was organized devoted to the teaching of medical bioethics, which pointed to the need to integrate the various disciplines involved with medical ethics.

The Commission cooperates with the Medical Ethics Section of the Cracow Branch of the Polish Medical Society, and through its participation in international conferences also works with international organizations involved in bioethical issues.
